Help the girls in your life navigate puberty with confidence and understanding.
Isla’s World, A Girl’s Puberty Guide is a valuable and much needed puberty companion for girls with intellectual disabilities and their trusted adults/ caregivers. Eleanor wrote the book using a social story style format which includes directive language, positive phrasing and repetition. In the book, Eleanor wanted to include straightforward and factual information and she uses Isla, the book’s neurodiverse main character to convey this in a reassuring and inclusive way.
The book covers the physical changes that occur for girls during puberty such as breast development, body hair, spots and menstruation as well as the emotional changes that occur with hormones.
Eleanor grouped all of these changes into five main colour coded sections for ease of access. And so, the reader is guided through each inclusive section; Breasts, Hair, Spots, Periods and Hormones. Isla’s pet cat offers a playful and fun element to the illustrationsand numerous friends appear with Isla throughout the book
Eleanor also put the main new vocabulary introduced in the book into a helpful Visuals/Sight Word Vocabulary section in the back and these visuals can be cut out and used separately if needed.
The book is beautifully illustrated by talented children’s book illustrator Helena Crevel who worked with Eleanor on the Popper Monster Book Series. She brought Eleanor’s vision of Isla and her world perfectly perfectly to life on each of the 60 full colour pages. Helena works primarily in gouache and pencil, as well as digital media.
